A cool autumn night
so easy finding that place
in the village, a party
where there were no strangers,
no infidels, just a group sitting
on the floor at the feet
of the Mayor of McGee Street,
who wore knickers and rainbow socks.
We thought he was just a coot, a hoot,
as he did the two-step around the room
killing me, killing every one of us,
dancers all in the night.
Afterward, we walked our way home,
humming a highway song,
like prisoners awakened from
the dream that we thought was real.
